Viagene Inc. of San Diego on Wednesday said that it completed a second closing of its series D preferred stock private placement, bringing the total raised to $7 million. GATEWAY FOR AIDS TO NERVOUS SYSTEM
An alternative gateway for the AIDS virus to enter the nervous system is suggested by the specific binding of the viral coat protein gp120 to the brain glycolipid galactosyl ceramide (GalCer), according to a report in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. TECHNE TO SELL CHEMICAL INSTRUMENT SUBSIDIARY
Consolidating its focus on the diagnostics market, Techne Corp. said Wednesday that it will sell its wholly owned chemical instrument subsidiary, Hycel S.A., to Lisabio, a French instrument firm. Subject to final agreement, Lisabio will buy all outstanding Hycel stock. Techne (NASDAQ:TECH) will receive $1 million in cash. CYTRX GETS ANOTHER RHEOTHRX PATENT
CytRx Corp. said Wednesday that it has received its 13th patent on RheothRx. U.S. patent No. 5,041,288 covers the use of RheothRx for the treatment of reperfusion injury, which occurs when an organ such as the heart is deprived of blood. WARNER-LAMBERT TO SELL KABI'S NICOTINE PATCH
A nicotine patch to decrease the craving for cigarettes will be marketed in the United States and Canada by Warner-Lambert, in a licensing agreement with Kabi Pharmacia AB of Sweden. TWO COMPANIES TEST IPO MARKET
Now that Wall Street has had time to digest this spring's spate of initial public offerings, a number of biotech companies are betting that the market has an appetite for more. FIVE MORE SUITS FILED AGAINST XOMA
Xoma Corp. said Tuesday that it has been named in five additional shareholders lawsuits, bringing to seven the number of suits against the Berkeley, Calif.-based company. PERSEPTIVE RAISES $6.75M IN FUNDING
PerSeptive Biosystems Inc. said on Tuesday that it has raised $6.75 million in an oversubscribed round of private venture funding. The Cambridge, Mass., company had only hoped for $5 million. COLUMBIA RAISES $15 MILLION
Columbia Laboratories Inc. on Tuesday said it had closed its private placement of 150,000 shares of series B convertible preferred stock priced at $100 per share, raising $15 million. BioTechnica International Inc. announced Tuesday that it has completed an agreement with MGI Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ:MOGN) to license the latter's technology for improving the protein quality of corn. BTGC CLOSE TO WIPING OUT DEBT
Bio-Technology General Corp., a company whose name used to be virtually synonymous with debt, is about to wipe the slate clean. ICN SUBMITS NDA FOR ANTI-VIRAL
WASHINGTON -- ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc. has submitted a new drug application to the Food and Drug Administration for its anti-viral drug Virazole for treating hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). In May, the FDA granted Virazole orphan drug designation for the treatment of HFRS, which is caused by the Hantaan virus and can cause severe shock, internal bleeding and kidney failure.
