BioWorld's Executive Compensation Report 2005, now available, shows that CEO salaries and bonuses rose in 2003, and the average biotechnology CEO took home more than half a million dollars in pay and bonuses. In fact, pay rose modestly for CEOs, chief financial officers and business development executives.

For science and legal executives, the year was less kind. The average legal executive in 2003 suffered a nearly 2 percent cut (salary plus bonus), and the average head of R&D lost nearly 3 percent in total compensation.

To construct a picture of executive compensation in the industry, BioWorld analyzed proxy statements from 231 public biotech companies. The 2005 report includes data on five positions: CEOs, CFOs and executive in R&D, business and/or corporate development, and legal affairs.
