Molecular underpinnings of cancers on the move

Researchers have gained new insights into the cellular processes that underlie tumor invasion, the initial step toward metastasis. The findings show that the cells leading such invasion express certain proteins at high levels, and that the invasiveness of a tumor is determined by how many of its cells express those factors. Invasiveness is “the step that most markedly separates survival rates” of patients, Johns Hopkins University’s Andrew Ewald told BioWorld Today. Ewald is the senior author of the paper reporting the findings, which appeared in the Dec. 12, 2013, issue of Cell.
