Two conferences scheduled for next month aim to take regionallooks at different aspects of the biotechnology industry in twocorners of the continental U.S. -- the Northwest and California.

However, anyone interested in listening in on both face a testof their regional loyalties or the need for an airline ticket. Theconferences -- in Seattle and San Diego -- have overlappingschedules on Sept. 11.

In San Diego, the CalBioSummit '92, scheduled for Friday, Sept.11, is expected to hear from California Gov. Pete Wilson, whowill give the luncheon keynote address. Vice President DanQuayle and White House counsel and biotech expert C. BoydenGray, have also been invited.

The purpose of the meeting is to gain support from statelegislators, key state and local administrators and members ofthe media on issues crucial to keeping biotechnology companiesin California, summit organizers said. In Seattle, Medical Investments Northwest, will focus onresearch and development prospects and corporate finance andhear from 10 biotechnology companies on Sept. 10 and 11. Theinvitation-only conference is expected to draw about 100 to125 investors, investment analysts and media representatives,according to Katharine Russell, who is handling public relationsfor the conference. She is president of Russell-Welsh Inc., apublic relations agency, in San Mateo, Calif. More informationcan be obtained from her.

The first-time conference for the Northwest was suggested byofficials at two Seattle-area companies, CellPro Inc. and IcosCorp., to provide a centralized format for companies exchangeinformation with investors, Russell said. One Canadiancompany, Quadra Logic Technologies, is included.
