• Boston Scientific (Natick, Massachusetts) reported that Ken Stein, MD, will the join the company as Senior VP and CMO for its Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) group. Stein will oversee the development and execution of clinical strategy for the company's CRM group.

• China Medicine (Guangzhou, China) a developer and distributor of prescription and over the counter pharmaceuticals, traditional Chinese medicines, nutritional and dietary supplements, and medical devices and medical formulations, reported the appointment of Richard Wu as its new CFO, effective Aug. 25. Wu replaces Huizhen Yu, who had served as CFO since February 2006.

• Saint John's Health Center (Santa Monica, California) reported the appointment of neurosurgeon Amin Kassam, MD, as director of the new Saint John's Neuroscience Institute and faculty member of the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's. Kassam will lead the development of the new Neuroscience Institute which will offer an international minimally invasive neurosurgery center, as well as neuro-oncology, neuro-vascular surgery and other neuroscience services.

• Tethys Bioscience (Emeryville, California) reported that former CBO Michael Richey has been promoted to president, and that several key executives have joined the company's management team. Eric Book, MD, has joined the company as CMO, overseeing the company's medical affairs, including clinical studies, scientific publications and payer strategies and regulatory affairs. Eric comes to Tethys from Blue Shield of California, where he was senior VP and CMO. Brian Best, Tethys VP of Commercial Operations, is leading the company's global commercialization efforts. Ted Tarasow, newly named VP of Product Development and Laboratory Operations, has assumed responsibility for general laboratory operations in both the company's Emeryville and West Sacramento locations. Tarasow will oversee supply chain, product development, laboratory operations, and advanced technology programs at the company.

• Transcend Medical (Menlo Park, California) an ophthalmic device company dedicated to delivering breakthrough advances in the treatment of glaucoma, reported it has filled two key positions with the addition of Sean Ianchulev, MD, as CMO and Ginger Clasby as VP of Clinical Affairs.
