Lawrence Gray, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon, and Mark Ballentyne, MD, at Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center (Portsmouth, New Hampshire) have selected Artefill, a microsphere-enhanced collagen filler for the correction of smile lines, to treat patients who are looking for a longer lasting dermal filler. Both physicians have been avid Artefill users the past several years due to its proven success and effectiveness for the correction of wrinkles.
Gray said, "We've had a very pleasant experience with Artefill's ease of injection and our patients are very happy with the long lasting results. Many have recommended Artefill to their friends, which is the ultimate compliment to the product. Also, happily, we have not seen any complications."
The in-office procedure takes about 15 minutes to complete. A patient is injected with Artefill similar to other dermal fillers with the key difference being its lasting effect. The microspheres in Artefill are not absorbed by the body and therefore provide the support the skin needs for long lasting natural feeling results. This is different from temporary dermal fillers that are made of different kinds of natural or synthetic materials that are completely absorbed by the body over time and require repeat injections to maintain wrinkle correction.
"Artefill is trouble-free to administer and because the results improve over time, instead of diminishing, our patients seem to really love it," Ballentyne said.
Artefill was approved in 2006, more than 10,000 patients have been treated, according to the maker, Suneva Medical (San Diego).
