Biomet (Warsaw, Indiana) and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF; Rosemont, Illinois) Graduate Medical Education Partnership have reported that they have issued out the 2009 Graduate Medical Education (GME) fellowship grants. Fellowships in orthopedic surgery provide surgeons with advanced training in the treatment of specific, complex bone and joint disorders.

Through its partnership with OREF, Biomet contributes $25,000 for each fellowship grant, an amount chosen to maximize the number of fellowship programs which receive funding.

On Jan. 7, Biomet and the OREF reported a partnership to provide multi-year funding that supports GME programs in orthopedic surgery.

For calendar 2009, Biomet made a grant of $1 million to the OREF and anticipates a total donation over a 5-year period of nearly $7 million.
