CFO Jess Jankowski was promoted to president/CEO and member of the board of directors at Nanophase Technologies (Romeoville, Illinois). Jankowski had been acting CEO since August 2008. He also will continue to serve as CFO as the company conducts a search for his replacement in that role. Nanophase also reported that Richard Brotzman has resigned as chief technology officer and Robert Haines as VP of operations. Nanophase is a specialty nanotechnology company.

Thomas Loring was promoted to senior VP of worldwide product and technology development for Small Bone Innovations (SBi; New York). Loring had been VP of worldwide product development since 2006.

• Sparta Systems (Holmdel, New Jersey) reported the appointment of two software and life sciences industry veterans to its executive leadership team. Diane Carlson was named VP of marketing communications and Marina Aslanyan was named VP of professional services. Carlson joins Sparta Systems from IntraLinks, where she was senior VP for marketing communications and branding. Aslanyan previously was senior IT leader at Barr Laboratories. Sparta Systems specializes in global quality and compliance management systems.
