• Ulrich Baurmeister, PhD, has joined Arbios Systems (Waltham, Massachusetts) as chief technology officer, and Jan Stange, MD, has joined the company as senior clinical advisor. Jacek Rozga, MD, PhD, will continue to serve as the company’s chief scientific officer part-time beginning Nov. 30. Baurmeister serves Arbios part-time, alongside his role as advisor and senior visiting scientist at the University Hospital Charite (Berlin). Stange is a professor of bioartificial therapies at the University of Rostock. Rozga, a founder of Arbios, has served as the company’s chief scientific officer since 2005, having previously served as president/CEO. Arbios develops devices and cell-based therapies for liver failure patients.

• Rick Van Hoesen has been appointed CFO and senior VP of finance at Epocrates (San Mateo, California). Previously Van Hoesen served as CFO of NetIQ. Epocrates develops solutions that support clinical decisions at the point of care.

• Janilee Johnson has been appointed chief communications officer, a newly created position, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC; Pittsburgh). Previously, Johnson was chief communications officer and VP of corporate communications and public affairs for Motorola. UPMC bills itself as the largest integrated healthcare enterprise in Pennsylvania.
