There were 39 CEOs whose compensation packages exceeded $2 million last year ¿ more than double the previous year. Furthermore, two biotech CEOs surpassed the $50 million mark, a first for the biotechnology industry.
The latest information on their compensation now is available in the BioWorld Executive Compensation Report 2002. The 100-plus page report details the salaries of CEOs, CFOs and top R&D officials at 256 public biotech companies, 32 more than in last year¿s report.
The average salary plus bonus for a biotech CEO in 2000 was $470,000, while the median was $391,000. The multimillion-dollar salaries include stock options as of Dec. 31, 2000, which in most cases are not worth as much now. The median CFO salary plus bonus in 2000 was $231,000, and the median for R&D heads was $252,000.
