The markets are open, and companies are resuming the business of biotechnology. Here are news items stemming from the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11:

¿ Amersham Pharmacia Biotech, of Piscataway, N.J., and Nycomed Amersham Imaging, of Princeton, N.J., established the Amersham Manhattan Disaster Fund, to support the local communities in which Amersham employees work. Amersham plc will contribute $500,000 to the fund.

¿ Amgen Inc., of Thousand Oaks, Calif., said it will donate $2 million for relief efforts. Also, Amgen will match contributions made by employees to relief organizations related to the attacks.

¿ Atrix Laboratories Inc., of Fort Collins, Colo., said its board approved a stock repurchase program to acquire up to $5 million of its common stock.

¿ Pain Therapeutics Inc., of South San Francisco, rescheduled all remaining third-quarter 2001 company announcements. The announcements will be made at a later date.

¿ PharmaNetics Inc., of Raleigh, N.C., said its board adopted a stock repurchase plan, authorizing the buying back of up to $1 million of its stock either in the open market or through privately negotiated transactions at any time during the next 12 months.
