Abiomed (Danvers, Massachusetts), maker of the AbioCor implantable replacement heart and other heart-assist devices, said that Eugene Rabe, senior vice president, will have added responsibilities for the company's worldwide marketing and customer support functions, along with his longstanding role directing the company's sales teams. Prior to joining Abiomed in 1993, Rabe was a sales manager for St. Jude Medical. Abiomed also named Kathleen Walsh vice president for human resources.
James Fattu, MD, PhD, senior vice president, clinical research, at Wyeth-Ayerst, has been elected chairman of the American Heart Association's (Dallas, Texas) Pharmaceutical Roundtable.
Karl Mosch has been named president and CEO of CardioVasc (Menlo Park, California), a developer of small-diameter vascular stent-grafts and surface treatments promoting the rapid endothelialization of the implants. Most recently, Mosch was chairman of Hemodynamics.
EP MedSystems (Mt. Arlington, New Jersey) said that it has established a new position of president and chief operating officer and has hired Reinhard Schmidt to fill the position. Since 1998, Schmidt has been president of Surgical Navigation Specialist. EP MedSystems develops electrophysiology products used to diagnose and treat cardiac rhythm disorders.
Nicky Spaulding, president of the cardiac surgery business of Guidant (Indianapolis, Indiana), has been promoted to the Guidant management committee. Spaulding is based in Guidant's Santa Clara, California, location.
Medivance (Louisville, Colorado) has named Edgar Rey vice president of sales and Randall Greene director of U.S. sales. Prior to joining Medivance, Rey was Southeast regional sales manager for Cardiothoracic Systems, a division of Guidant. Medivance is a privately held medical device company that develops therapeutic temperature management methods for critical care applications including surgery and stroke.
Mark Sutter has been appointed president and CEO of Terumo Cardiovascular Systems (Ann Arbor, Michigan). He replaces Koji Nakao, who will resume his responsibilities as head of the Strategic Planning Group of Terumo Corp. in Tokyo and president of Terumo Europe. Most recently, Sutter was president of the BioSciences division at Pall.
Patrick Nestor has been named general manager for first responder and public access defibrillation at Zoll Medical (Burlington, Massachusetts). Nestor most recently was vice president of sales for CAS Medical Systems. Zoll makes noninvasive cardiac resuscitation devices.
