Mycogen Corp. (NASDAQ:MYCO) announced that its Agrigeneticsdivision has signed an agreement with Forage Genetics Inc. ofWest Salem, Wis., to jointly develop and market geneticallyengineered alfalfa varieties that will be resistant to importantinsect pests.

Initial research and product development will focus onintroducing genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacteria intoalfalfa varieties to protect them against the alfalfa weevil.

Forage Genetics will manage marketing the new varieties to theseed industry, while Agrigenetics' seed divisions will haveaccess to products developed through the collaboration.Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
