Dekalb Genetics Corp. of Dekalb, Ill., has expanded its specialty-use product line, acquiring germ plasm for food-grade whitecorn from NobleBear Company of Overland Park, Kan., a leadingmarketer of hybrid seed for white corn.

NobleBear also included a small supply of four commercialhybrids that will be available to Dekalb (NASDAQ:SEEDB)customers in 1993.

"This acquisition is intended to strengthen the food cornproduct line of our seed business," said Bruce Bickner, Dekalb'schairman and chief executive officer. "It allows us to offer ourdealers and customers a wider selection of Dekalb food cornhybrids of varying maturities.

"The white corn market currently accounts for less than 1percent of seed corn acreage in the United States," Bickneradded. "However, it has experienced good growth in recentyears, primarily due to the popularity of tacos and otherMexican foods. The acquisition enhanced our competitiveposition."

DeKalb researches, produces and markets seed, hybrid swineand egg-laying breeding stock.
