CHIRON LEADS THE PACKChiron Corp. jumped $3.25 on Thursday to $53.25, leadingadvances by several top-tier biotech companies. The company(NASDAQ:CHIR) had no explanation for the rise.
Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGEN) was the volume leader in thesector, gaining $2.13 to $61 on 1.4 million shares. GensiaPharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:GNSA) added $2.75 to $35, andSynergen Inc. (NASDAQ:SYGN) closed up $1.75 at $45.
Genzyme Corp. (NASDAQ:GENZ) closed up $1.50 at $50.25. Thecompany announced that sale of the overallotment of units inits Neozyme II Corp. R&D spinoff had raised $11 million. Sale ofthe 315,000 additional units at $35 brought the total proceedsfrom the April 28 offering to $84.5 million. Neozyme II willdevelop treatments for cystic fibrosis.
The AMEX Biotechnology Index moved up 3.28 to 155.63.
Among non-index issues, International Murex Technologies(AMEX:MXX) gained $1.50 to $16.38 on nearly 450,000 shares.
