Putting into jeopardy what was on track to be the first approved therapy in Europe for geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration that causes blindness, Apellis Pharmaceuticals Inc. learned of a negative trend vote by the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) on its MAA for intravitreal pegcetacoplan.
“We’re going to battle,” PTC Therapeutics Inc. CEO Matthew Klein said, responding to a surprise negative opinion from the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use on converting the conditional marketing authorization to full status for Translarna (ataluren) in the treatment of nonsense mutation Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The opinion applies to the renewal of the existing conditional authorization, too.

DUBLIN – The European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use closed out its year’s work with positive opinions on two applications, Novartis AG’s Beovu (brolucizumab) in wet age-related macular degeneration and Merck & Co. Inc.’s Recarbrio for treating gram negative infections in adults.
DUBLIN Friday marked an important milestone for the EMA as its settles into its new home in Amsterdam. The Dutch authorities formally handed over to the agency the keys to its new building, which is located in the Zuidas district of the city.
