The U.S. FDA cleared respiratory imaging technology company 4dmedical Ltd.’s computed tomography lung ventilation analysis software (CT LVAS) that is nearly identical to its X-ray velocimetry technology but uses CT imaging and provides greater access to the four-dimensional imaging technology.
Thirona BV has been awarded $2.73 million in funding from the European Innovation Council (EIC) to fast-track the development of its artificial intelligence (AI)-based lung platform to analyze chest CT imaging. In competition with 554 other submissions, Thirona was one of 51 innovative technology companies awarded the EIC accelerator program grant, the total budget for which is €261 million (US$286.28 million) in 2023.

Aidoc Medical Ltd. has just presented a study using its AI tool in the Netherlands Cancers Institute for detection and worklist prioritization to diagnose incidental pulmonary embolism at routine contrast-enhanced chest CT. The results published in Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging show a reduction by 15% of the missed rate of incidental pulmonary embolism and by more than 98% of the notification time for positive incidental pulmonary embolism. “Our AI system gives a response related to the interpretation, quantification and workflow management,” Elad Walach, co-founder and CEO of Aidoc Medical, told BioWorld. Due to the growing volume of radiology examinations, particularly in thoracic imaging, and the lack of supply radiologists, the delay between the CT examinations and their interpretation has increased significantly in many practices. This is particularly true for pulmonary embolism (PE).
Avicenna.AI SAS secured a further $7.5 million in series A funding, bringing the total aggregated investment in the company so far to $10.4 million. The round was backed by the two existing Paris-based investors: Cemag Invest SAS and Innovacom Gestion SAS. “Thanks to this funding, we are now able to ramp deployment of our software platform around the world, as well as diversify our offering into new areas of medicine,” Cyril Di Grandi, CEO and co-founder of Avicenna.AI SAS, told BioWorld.

Curvebeam AI Ltd. won a U.S. FDA breakthrough device designation for Ossview, its investigational software that detects osteopenia or reduced bone mass in the already fragile bones of women 70 years of age and older. Osteopenia is difficult to diagnose using conventional bone mineral density (BMD) testing because small changes in density mask major changes in bone microstructure.
HONG KONG – Fujifilm Corp. has entered an agreement with Hitachi Ltd. to acquire Hitachi Ltd.’s diagnostic imaging-related business to further expand Fujifilm’s health care business. Prior to the acquisition, Hitachi will found a new company and implement an absorption-type company split whereby the new company will absorb the business.
