The co-founder and CEO of Total Flow Medical Ltd, Hilary Pierce, reported the filing of a patent for bidirectional flow cannulas configured and designed to replace conventional femoral arterial cannulas for extracorporeal circulation during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures and that provide an optional dedicated blood flow to the ipsilateral limb.
Cardiorenal Systems Inc. has scored a U.S. FDA breakthrough device designation for technology to prevent patients undergoing cardiac surgery from developing acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI is reported in up to 30% of approximately 780,000 cardiac surgeries performed each year in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, complicating patient recovery, prolonging ICU hospitalization and contributing to patient mortality after surgery.
Abiomed Inc. has won the U.S. FDA’s nod for its Breethe Oxy-1 device, an all-in-one, compact cardiopulmonary bypass system designed for easy mobility. The company plans a controlled release at U.S. hospitals between now and March of 2021, with widespread availability later that year.
