Orphazyme ApS Snags $19.7M In Series A for Hsp70 Program

Danish biopharmaceutical company Orphazyme ApS raised €14 million (US$19.7 million) in a Series A financing to move its lead program, Orph-001, into the clinic. The company, based in Copenhagen, is pursuing technology related to molecular chaperone heat-shock protein 70 (Hsp70) to treat disorders known as lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) – a family of more than 45 often-fatal genetic disorders with few existing treatment options. ISTA Pharmaceuticals Inc., of Irvine, Calif., said a paper published in RETINA, The Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases, of a pilot study suggested that the topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory eye drop Xibrom (bromfenac ophthalmic solution) administered twice daily might have an additive effect when used with intravitreal Lucentis (ranibizumab injection, Roche AG) in reducing retinal thickness in neovascular age-related macular degeneration.
