Illumina (San Diego) named William Rastetter, PhD, non-executive chairman of the board and promoted John Stuelpnagel to the newly created position of chief operating officer. Rastetter continues full-time as the executive chairman of Biogen IDEC. Stuelpnagel is a founder of Illumina, which is developing tools for the large-scale analysis of genetic variation and function. Its BeadArray technology enables researchers to perform billions of tests to extract information from advances in genomics and proteomics.

Angela Dotson joined SmartPill Diagnostics (Buffalo, New York) as senior vice president, sales and marketing. Dotson was previously with Given Imaging, where she held the position of vice president of sales and medical education, North America. SmartPill Diagnostics is the developer of the SmartPill Capsule, a non-invasive, ingestible medical device that captures biomedical data from within the patient's GI tract.

Gregory Furness has resigned as CFO of Vital Images (Minneapolis), effective Feb. 8. Vital Images has engaged Michael Carrel of Technology Solutions (Chicago), where he is a senior vice president, as interim CFO. Most recently, Carrel served as president, CEO and chief financial officer of Zamba. Vital Images provides visualization software for use in disease screening applications, clinical diagnosis and therapy planning.
