BioWorld has a long tradition of excellence in journalism. Collectively, the news services have been honored with 56 awards from the Specialized Information Publishing Association dating back to 1998, including placement in the overall best daily publication category 13 times.
BioWorld was launched as a magazine in 1990 by David Bunnell and Cynthia Robbins-Roth (a former scientist from Genentech). Bunnell was a pioneer of the personal computing industry who founded some of the most successful computer magazines, including PC Magazine, PC World and Macworld. He had the idea that biotechnology would become a big thing and he was right! Early on, BioWorld was converted to a faxed publication, called BioWorld Today. Shortly after, BioWorld Financial Watch (a weekly look at financial trends) was launched along with a nascent data service which tracked the biopharmaceutical industry. BioWorld’s former owner, Thompson Media Group, acquired BioWorld in 1994. BioWorld dropped the faxed version and converted to digital delivery. BioWorld was acquired by Thomson Reuters in 2013. In 2016 Thomson Reuters spun off the Intellectual Property and Science division, which emerged as an independent company now known as Clarivate Analytics.
The assets of Biomedical Business International were acquired in 1994. The flagship publication, The BBI Newsletter, was converted to a weekly for the med-tech industry in 1997. In 2001, it became Medical Device Daily. In 2017, the news service was rebranded as BioWorld MedTech.
In response to a rapidly increasing demand for more news from this region, BioWorld Asia was launched in 2013 to provide biopharmaceutical executives with a trusted, steady stream of intelligence from this critical part of the world.
