Molecular Devices Corp. has introduced for commercial sale itsCytosensor Microphysiometer, which allows scientists to non-invasively detect and characterize biological responses of livingcells.
The Cytosensor uses living cells on a silicon sensor, measuringfluctuations in metabolic rate using Molecular's light-addressable potentiometric sensor technology. According to theprivately held Menlo Park, Calif., company, researchers canexamine the reactions of living cells to chemical and biologicalagents and receptor binding as they occur without harming thecells. In contrast, most other analytical methods damage ordestroy cells. The Cytosensor sells for $95,000.
