• Acclarent (Menlo Park, California) reported the completion of a study evaluating the treatment of patients with Balloon Sinuplasty technology in the office setting. The study evaluated the safety, effectiveness, and cost of performing sinus surgery in the office versus in a hospital operating room setting. Acclarent's initial focus is on achieving the goals of sinus surgery with novel, endoscopic, catheter-based tools – Balloon Sinuplasty devices. With the Balloon Sinuplasty technology and the Relieva product portfolio, ENT patients can have alternatives to conventional endoscopic surgical approaches.

• Bausch & Lomb Vision Care (Rochester, New York) reported a renewed focus on its ReNu brand of lens care solutions through a U.S. consumer rebranding effort that introduces eye care practitioners and consumers to ReNu Fresh Lens Comfort and ReNu Sensitive Eyes. The company says that ReNu Fresh Lens Comfort, formerly ReNu MultiPlus, is specifically designed to keep contact lenses feeling like a fresh pair – every day. The formula is the only multi-purpose solution on the market with Hydranate, a clinically-tested ingredient that removes protein deposits that accumulate during wear. It also contains poloxamine to help remove dirt and debris and enhance wettability and moisture retention for a more comfortable feeling throughout the day, as well as DYMED, which provides unsurpassed disinfection efficacy. "We felt that it was time to rejuvenate our original ReNu brand of lens care solutions through a consumer need-driven portfolio approach that clearly articulates the specific benefits of each formula," said Steven Robins, president, North America, B&L vision care.

• GI Dynamics (Lexington, Massachusetts) reported results from a pilot clinical study that demonstrated the "substantially enhanced" weight loss effects of combining the company's EndoBarrier Gastrointestinal Liner with a new EndoBarrier Flow Restrictor. The EndoBarrier Flow Restrictor provides an adjustable restriction at the outlet of the stomach and is designed to delay gastric emptying, an additional mechanism which adds to the therapeutic effects of the liner. The EndoBarrier Gastrointestinal Liner is placed in the GI tract endoscopically (via the mouth) to create a barrier between food and the wall of the intestine. Physicians believe that preventing food from coming into contact with the intestinal wall may alter the activation of hormonal signals that originate in the intestine, thus mimicking the effects of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure without surgery.

• Phadia (Portage, Michigan) said it has received FDA clearance for eight new EliA ENA autoimmune antibody assays. These new assays will provide physicians the tools needed to further differentiate a positive ANA screen and guide them to a more specific Connective Tissue Disease (CTD) diagnosis. The new assays provide semi-quantitative results for the presence of ENA antibodies to the following antigens: Sm, U1RNP, RNP70, Ro, La, Scl-70, CENP and Jo-1. The presence of these very specific antibodies support or help confirm the diagnosis of specific CTDs. These diseases are complex and often difficult to diagnose. With these new individual ENA assays, clinicians now have a complete array of Phadia tools to aid in the diagnosis and evaluation of a range of CTDs such as lupus, Sjogren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, limited systemic sclerosis, poly-dermatomyositis, and mixed connective tissue disease.
