• AmeriPath (Palm Beach Gardens, Florida), a national provider of anatomic pathology, dermatopathology and molecular diagnostics services to physicians, hospitals, clinical laboratories and surgery centers, appointed Dr. Michael Robles director of gastrointestinal pathology, AmeriPath North Texas. Prior to his appointment, Robles had served as a Robert E. Petras fellow at AmeriPath's Institute of Gastro-intestinal Pathology and Digestive Disease.
• Eric Fung, MD, PhD, has been promoted to chief scientific officer of Ciphergen Biosystems (Fremont, Cal-ifornia). In addition, he will chair the newly formed scientific advisory board. Fung joined Ciphergen in 2000, most recently serving as vice president of clinical and medical affairs. Ciphergen makes a family of ProteinChip Systems and services for clinical, research and process proteomics applications.
• Maria Carles, PhD, formerly with the Scripps Research Institute, has joined the management team of Gwathmey (Cambridge, Massachusetts) as vice president of scientific operations. While at Scripps she worked in the Molecular and Experimental Medicine Department on the molecular basis of acquired and hereditary human diseases. Gwathmey is a pre-clinical contract research organization focusing on arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and infectious disease.
• HealthSouth (Birmingham, Alabama) reported that Gregory Doody, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary, has resigned in order to become general counsel of Calpine. HealthSouth will continue to work with its existing outside law firms for corporate legal services as it begins the process of recruiting a new general counsel. Doody joined HealthSouth in 2003 from the law firm of Balch & Bingham. HealthSouth is one of the nation's largest providers of outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitative healthcare services, operating facilities nationwide.
• Lidia Fonseca has been promoted to executive vice president, global operations and technology of Synarc (San Francisco). Since joining the company in 2005, Fonseca has been primarily responsible for systems and technology functions at Synarc involving IT, engineering and clinical data management functions. Synarc provides centralized imaging and molecular marker services for clinical trials.
• Ultrasonix Medical (Burnaby, British Columbia), specializing in ultrasound and informatics, has appointed Lyle Mussman to serve as vice president of sales-North America; John Fitzgerald as general manager-Europe sales; and Peter Redden as general manager-Asia sales. Mussman was most recently vice president of sales and marketing for Mirabel Medical Systems. Fitzgerald has been in the healthcare field for 34 years, the last 10+ years of which he has been based in Europe and the previous years in the Canadian market. Redden possesses more than 20 years' experience in the Asia-Pacific region, most recently as general manager for Cooper Surgical.
