Xoma Corp. said it will issue non-exclusive licenses to its U.S.patent No. 5,028,530, issued July 2, covering technology forthe production of genetically engineered proteins in E. colibacteria.

The invention links the promoter portion of the ara B gene togenes encoding the desired protein, permitting expression oflarge quantities of the protein. The ara B gene codes for anenzyme involved in the synthesis of sugars that play a role inthe metabolic pathways of cells.

Xoma (NASDAQ:XOMA) of Berkeley, Calif., said it will issuelicenses for non-competitive uses of the technology.
