British Technology Group USA has acquired technology for arecombinant vaccine against a poultry disease from CampbellSoup Co.'s Campbell Institute for Research and Technology.

BTG has filed for a patent on the vaccine and will market thetechnology to other companies.

Preliminary studies at Campbell have shown that the vaccineagainst coccidiosis, an infection of domestic animals, fights sixstrains of the protozoan parasite that causes weight loss anddeath in poultry.

Coccidiosis is controlled by anti-parasitics and by vaccines thatuse a weakened, live form of the infecting organism. There is"plenty of competition" to develop a recombinant vaccine, saidRichard D. Gill, BTG vice president for agribusiness and food,"but we think this is the best one we've seen yet." -- RF
