Owlstone closes $58M series D funding round, readies for IPO

LONDON – Breath biopsy specialist Owlstone Medical Ltd. closed a $58 million oversubscribed series D, bringing the total raised by the company since its formation in 2016 to over $150 million. The money will support further development of tests for lung cancer, liver disease and respiratory disease, and of a new class of diagnostics, which rather than measuring endogenous markers of disease, involve administering chemical probes and assessing how they are metabolized.

Vedanta’s $68M series D to bolster its human microbiome therapies

Proceeds from Vedanta Biosciences Inc.’s just closed $68 million series D financing will be used for a phase III study of the company’s lead candidate, VE-303, composed of eight clonal human commensal bacterial strains to give colonization resistance for treating Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, and also for a phase II study of VE-202, made up of 16 clonal human commensal bacterial strains for treating inflammatory bowel disease.

CMR Surgical continues record-breaking pace with $600M series D funding

LONDON – CMR Surgical Ltd. has once again broken the record for a private financing round by a European med-tech company, raising $600 million in a series D funding round. That follows on from two other record-breaking rounds, in which the Cambridge, U.K.-based CMR raised $240 million in a series C in September 2019 and $100 million in the series B round that closed in May 2018. These earlier rounds enabled CMR to complete development and install the first commercial versions of its Versius surgical robots. Now the series D will push the company through to profitability, the company said.

Quanta secures $245M for FDA-cleared portable dialysis system

Quanta Dialysis Technologies Ltd. raised $245 million in a series D round led by Glenview Capital. The funds will be used to accelerate commercialization of the company’s SC+ portable hemodialysis system. Novo Holdings co-led the oversubscribed and upsized financing, with support from Blackrock, Eldridge, Sands Capital, Millennium Management, Monashee Investment Management LLC, Puhua Capital, Segulah Medical and Ancora, alongside Orlando Health, an integrated delivery network.

Intocare bags $15.7M in series D to double down on its e-stapling solutions

Suzhou-based Intocare Medical Technology Co. Ltd. raised up to ¥100 million (US$15.66 million) in a series D funding round led by Qiming Venture Partners. Oriza Holdings, Oriza FOFs and Yuanbio Venture Capital also participated in the round. The company said the proceeds would be used for product R&D, clinical research, marketing promotion, and the launch of new offices and production sites.

Akili raises $160M for digital cognitive medicine platform

Digital therapeutics startup Akili Interactive Inc. has secured $160 million in a combined equity and debt financing to accelerate commercialization of its Endeavorrx platform for cognitive disorders. The company won FDA clearance and the CE mark in June 2020 for its video game-based treatment, Endeavorrx ALK-T01, for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Lumicks completes $93M series D to advance next-gen life science tools

Lumicks BV raised $93 million in a series D financing led by new investors Farallon Capital Management and Lauxera Capital Partners. The proceeds are earmarked for expansion of the Lumicks’ product pipeline and for commercialization of its Z-Movi cell avidity analyzer.
