Early trial win bolsters Abogen entrant in China’s COVID-19 vaccine race

With phase Ib data published in The Lancet Microbe showing Suzhou Abogen Biosciences Co. Ltd.’s mRNA COVID-19 vaccine candidate ARCoV had acceptable safety and induced a strong immune response in the 120 people who received it, company partner Walvax Biotechnology Co. Ltd. is continuing to enroll participants in a large phase III test of the vaccine. If successful, the program could become the first of several Chinese-developed mRNA vaccines poised to take on the pandemic.

Edigene, Haihe Lab co-develop hematopoietic stem cell regenerative therapies

Edigene Inc. has extended a long-running partnership with an academic lab at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College with the goal of co-developing hematopoietic stem cell regenerative therapies and technology for the treatment of inherited blood disorders, as well as the discovery of biomarkers to improve quality control of stem cell production.

Mabwell Bioscience Co. Ltd. raised ¥3.48 billion ($547.9 million) in a Shanghai STAR Market IPO on Jan. 18 to support company R&D efforts and plans to build an antibody production plant. Though oversubscribed, the offering got a cool market reception, with shares plunging nearly 30% from a ¥32 open (US$27.96), then closing at ¥24.50 on the first day of trading before recovering slightly to ¥27.40 on Jan. 20.

Beijing Microkpro Medical Instrument Co. Ltd. has received marketing approval for its artificial cornea from China’s NMPA. Miok Keratoprosthesis is the world’s first artificial cornea made of 100% non-biological materials and does not require co-implantation of donor corneas, according to Microkpro Medical.

Targetingone Corp. Ltd.’s new testing kit based on digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) techniques has received approval from China’s NMPA. It is the first dCPR-based testing kit to receive the country’s class III medical device registration certificate. The Beijing-based company collaborated with Tsinghua University, several hospitals and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) participated to research and develop the testing kit.
