PAS for Abiomed Impella RP shows poor outcomes for patients not eligible for pivotal study

The U.S. FDA reported that the post-approval study (PAS) for the Impella RP by Abiomed Inc. of Danvers, Mass., demonstrated that the device performed well for patients who would have been eligible for the pivotal study, providing a 69.7% survival rate at 30 days after device explant.

FDA greenlights Organox Metra to preserve donated livers

In a move that will substantially expand the number of livers available for transplantation, the FDA granted premarket approval to Organox Ltd.’s Metra normothermic machine perfusion device for both donors after brain death (DBD) and donors after circulatory death (DCD). The approval allows preservation of organs by Metra for up to 12 hours.

Transmedics wins FDA advisory nod despite questions regarding lack of blinding

The FDA advisory hearing for the Transmedics Organ Care System (OCS) resulted in a unanimous vote in favor of the OCS’s safety and efficacy numbers, although there will be a considerable post-approval study requirement. The company was able to overcome a number of problems with the pivotal study that might otherwise have tanked the application, such as the lack of blinding of transplant surgeons, which the FDA said could have biased the determination of whether a liver was acceptable for transplant.

Transmedics comes away with win at advisory for heart transplant storage system

The shortage of hearts for transplant is a matter of record for both cardiologists and patients, a problem that Transmedics Inc. proposed to solve with its Organ Care System (OCS). Despite several significant issues associated with the pivotal clinical study for the OCS, Transmedics snared a 12-5 vote that the benefits of the system outweigh the risks, an outcome that may bring at least some relief for heart transplant patients by mid-year if analyst expectations are on target.
