INDEX OVERCOMES SETBACKSThe AMEX Biotechnology Index rebounded smartly fromTuesday's sharp sell-off, finishing with a 5-point gain Friday toclose at 160.63. The index closed above 160 for the first timesince mid-April.

Gensia Pharmaceuticals Inc. and its Aramed Inc. R&D spinoffcontinued a two-day run-up. Gensia (NASDAQ:GNSA) closed at$38.63, adding $3.63 to Thursday's $2.75 gain. Aramed(NASDAQ:ARAMZ) gained $4 to $42, on top of a $2 advanceThursday. Spokeswoman Martha Hough said there were nocompany developments or news to explain the moves.

Emisphere Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:EMIS), developingmicrosphere encapsulation technology for oral drug delivery,gained $3.50 during the week to close at $19.50 on averagevolume of 33,000 shares.

Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) was busy Friday, trading 1.7million shares, but closed unchanged at $61.
