GENENTECH 4Q PROFITS UP, BUT NOT PER-SHAREGenentech Inc. (NYSE:GNE) of South San Francisco, Calif., saidthat an increase in the number of outstanding shares, resultingfrom last year's merger with Roche Holdings Ltd., caused per-share profits to decline.

The company said that a previously reported $167.7 millionspecial charge, also merger-related, caused its loss for the year.At the end of 1990, the company said it had $691.3 million incash, compared with $205 million at the end of 1989.

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH POSTS LARGE LOSS

Collaborative Research Inc. (NASDAQ:CRIC) of Bedford, Mass.,reported that sales of biomedical products increased 6 percentfrom a year ago and contract and grant revenues rose 8percent. Sales of diagnostic products and services declined dueto a one-time sale of equipment in last year's first quarter. Thecompany said its total costs and expenses increased inproportion to the increase in revenues.
