HONG KONG – A team of researchers at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) claim to have invented the world’s fastest portable 2019-nCoV diagnostic device. From sampling to testing, the device is apparently able to detect the novel coronavirus in just 40 minutes. In comparison, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology that is currently in use can take between 1.5 to 3 hours. The device draws on the latest microfluidic chip technology from Shenzhen Shineway Hi-Tech Co. Ltd.

Hong Kong researchers develop coronavirus vaccine

HONG KONG – As drug developers are racing to find a cure for the new coronavirus, researchers in Hong Kong claim to have made major headway in the development of a vaccine for the virus that has so far killed 132. Yuen Kwok-yung, the chair of infectious diseases at the University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) department of microbiology, said in a press briefing at Hong Kong’s Queen Mary Hospital that his team had successfully isolated the novel virus from the first imported case in Hong Kong. But he said the vaccine still needs months to be tested on animals and an additional year for human trials before it is fit for use.

India to levy cess on med-tech imports to boost domestic industry

HONG KONG – Over the weekend, India’s Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has imposed a health cess (also known as tax on tax) of 5% on the imports of medical equipment, except those exempted from basic customs duty (BCD). The aim of this development, stated in Sitharaman’s 2020 budget address, is to give impetus to the domestic industry and to generate resources for health services in the country.

Inex inks deal for IVD kit in Taiwan

HONG KONG – Singapore molecular diagnostics group Inex Innovate Pte. Ltd. has inked a deal to have its in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) kit for the detection of ovarian cancer distributed in Taiwan. The value of the deal with the New Taipei City, Taiwan-based electronics and med-tech distributor Inalways Corp. is subject to annual minimum order quantities and milestones in relation to regulatory approvals.

Miracogen expands ADC deal with Synaffix

HONG KONG – In less than a year, China-based Shanghai Miracogen Inc. has extended its partnership with Oss, the Netherlands based Synaffix BV for a second antibody-drug conjugate (ADCs) candidate. The new deal is similar to one signed last year in that it gives Miracogen nonexclusive rights to Synaffix’s Glycoconnect and Hydraspace ADC technologies for use in a second clinical candidate.
