Medtronic plc’s diabetes unit posted another win with the U.S. FDA approval of the Simplera continuous glucose monitoring sensor for use with the Minimed 780G pump system, helping the company catch up with competitors Abbott Laboratories and Dexcom Inc. Medtronic plans to begin a limited launch of the Simplera Sync in the U.S. this fall.
Medtronic plc received CE mark for its latest miniature, leadless pacemakers, the Micra AV2 and Micra VR2. According to the company, they are the world's smallest pacemakers, provide a longer battery life, and are easier to program than previous Micra pacemakers, while maintaining the benefits of their predecessors such as reduced complications compared to traditional pacemakers.
At the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Annual Meeting this weekend, Medtronic plc provided an update for investors and showcased results from its devices that all demonstrated better time in range for users. The Dublin-based company provided strong results with the U.S. FDA warning letter now behind it and the 780G Minimed pump and Guardian 4 sensor launches well underway.
While still pending clearance in the U.S., Medtronic plc’s Minimed 780G advanced hybrid closed loop (AHCL) system continues to post strong results in clinical trials. Results of two studies presented at the 2023 Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes Conference in Berlin on Feb. 27 demonstrated that patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who used the device for one year maintained a 26.7% increase in time in range for adults and a 14% increase in time in range for children aged 7 to 17 compared to their baseline using multiple daily injections with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM).
Medtronic plc’s insulin pump adds more than six hours to the time-in-range for people with type 1 diabetes compared to the current standard of care, a recently published study found. The closed loop system also provides a far simpler method for controlling blood glucose levels compared to the multiple daily insulin injections and intermittent scans from a continuous glucose monitor widely employed today. The Adapt study results appeared in Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology on Sept. 1.
Medtronic plc, of Dublin, has gained CE-marking approval for its Minimed 780g system, a next-generation closed-loop insulin pump for people with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 7 and 80 years old. The advanced hybrid closed-loop system (AHCL) features an advanced autocorrection algorithm and Bluetooth connectivity.
SAN FRANCISCO – This was the final presentation for Omar Ishrak at the J.P. Morgan (JPM) Healthcare Conference. He has held the CEO position at Medtronic plc since June 2011. During that period, the Dublin-based company managed to roughly quadruple its valuation to $160 billion from $40 billion – making Ishrak’s tenure clearly a successful one.
