Ono scoops Ionis' hematology candidate sapablursen for up to $940M

Ono Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. struck a licensing deal with Ionis Pharmaceuticals Inc. for sapablursen, which is in phase II trials for polycythemia vera. Under terms, Osaka, Japan-based Ono gains an exclusive license to develop and commercialize sapablursen worldwide. Carlsbad, Calif.-based Ionis will be responsible for completing the ongoing phase II Imprssion study, while Ono will be responsible for subsequent development, regulatory filings and commercialization.

Ionis Pharmaceuticals Inc. CEO Brett Monia predicted that diagnoses of familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) will “accelerate fairly quickly” now that the firm has gained U.S. FDA clearance for Tryngolza (olezarsen) as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerides in adults with the rare form of severe hypertriglyceridemia (sHTG) that can lead to life-threatening acute pancreatitis (AP).

With a successful phase III study of plozasiran in hand, Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals Inc. plans to file an NDA with the U.S. FDA for treating the rare genetic disease familial chylomicronemia syndrome. While the data are strong, the company is playing catch-up to Ionis Pharmaceuticals Inc., which has a December 2024 PDUFA for its candidate, olezarsen, in the same indication.

The BioWorld Drug Developers Index (BDDI) continued to track closely with the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index (NBI) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), maintaining its trend upward after a decline at the end of April.
