Apple reintroduces pulseox via software update

Some Apple Watch users will be able to monitor their blood oxygen levels through their iPhone, thanks to a software update the company planned to issue Aug. 14. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company pulled the feature from its watches in the U.S. in 2024, following a patent dispute with Masimo Corp., of Irvine, Calif., that threatened an import ban.

News of the sale of Masimo Corp.’s consumer audio unit may be music to the ears of investors, even at the steep discount from its original purchase price. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.’s Harman International Industries Inc. unit snapped up the Sound United business for about $350 million – roughly one-third of the $1.025 billion Masimo paid for the company in 2022.

Masimo Corp. selected Catherine (Katie) Szyman, an industry leader with deep med-tech roots, to guide the company as it seeks to rebuild its reputation and revenues following a gritty two-year battle for control. Current CEO Michelle Brennan will serve as chairman of the Masimo board. Brennan stepped up to lead Masimo after founder and former CEO Joe Kiani resigned following a shareholder vote that ousted him from his position of board chair as part of a protracted proxy battle between Kiani and Politan Capital Management LP.

Masimo’s Stork takes flight with FDA’s over-the-counter clearance

Masimo Corp.’s pride and joy, the Stork baby monitor, achieved a new developmental milestone with U.S. FDA clearance for over-the-counter marketing. The agency cleared Stork, which monitors key vital signs including oxygen saturation level, pulse rate and skin temperature, for use on a prescription basis in December. It has been available in the U.S. as a health and wellness device since August 2023.

Sound decision: Masimo to split off consumer business

Less than two years after acquiring Sound United for $1.025 billion, Masimo Corp. plans to hive off the consumer audio subsidiary along with consumer health products such as its Stork baby monitor and Freedom smart watch and band. The “rushed” announcement made Friday “came after being informed that Politan intended to nominate directors this week,” said activist investor Politan Capital Management. Politan, which owns 8.9% of the company, secured two board seats in a highly contentious proxy battle last year and nominated two more on Monday morning.
