Astrazeneca plc is adding a preclinical-stage candidate to its cardiovascular pipeline via a potentially $2 billion licensing agreement with CSPC Pharmaceutical Group Ltd., which includes a $100 million up-front payment for rights to YS-2302018, an oral Lp(a) disruptor. It’s an impressive figure for such an early program, but the Cambridge, U.K.-based pharma hailed the small molecule’s potential against a range of indications, both alone and in combination regimens that could include PCSK9 inhibitor AZD-0780.

Akeso scores two new China approvals

Akeso Pharmaceuticals Inc. scored two approvals from China’s National Medical Products Administration on Sept. 30 before the long Labor Day holiday – one for its PCSK9 inhibitor, ebronucimab, and the second to expand use of PD-1/CTLA4 bispecific antibody cadonilimab in unresectable or metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, marking the second indication for cadonilimab in China.

Researchers from Astrazeneca plc presented the structure and preclinical characterization of a novel PCSK9 inhibitor, AZD-0780, being developed for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. A new potentially druggable functional binding pocket was identified on the PCSK9 C-terminal domain (CTD), and multiple fragment screens generated a single CTD-binding hit.

China’s National Medical Products Administration has approved Innovent Biologics Inc.’s proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin-type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor, Sintbilo (tafolecimab), making it the first first locally developed PCSK9 monoclonal antibody to be approved in China. The approval is for treatment of adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (including heterozygous familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia) and mixed dyslipidemia (abnormal lipid levels). Tafolecimab marks Innovent's first cardiovascular drug as well as the company’s 10th approval.
