Medtronic plc teamed up with healthtech software company Modernizing Medicine Inc. (ModMed) to make colonoscopy procedures more efficient by integrating data generated from Medtronic’s GI Genius system into ModMed's gGastro EHR software to enhance endoscopic care.

The gastroenterology team at the Paoli-Calmettes Institute in Marseille, France is conducting a therapeutic trial using G-Eye, the latest generation of colonoscope from Hanofar, Israel-based Smart Medical Systems Ltd. “The aim is to increase the detection rate of polyps thanks to a new type of device that can be connected to the current colonoscopes on the market,” Jean-Philippe Ratone, the principal investigator of the study and gastroenterologist at the Paoli-Calmettes Institute told BioWorld.

Medtronic plc has announced a plan by Cosmo Pharmaceuticals NV and Nvidia Inc. to integrate Nvidia's artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into Medtonic’s GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module. GI Genius is designed to host multiple AI algorithms as the first U.S. FDA-cleared, AI-assisted colonoscopy imaging tool for detecting polyps that can lead to colorectal cancer.

A 2,000-patient U.K. study has been set up to generate real-world evidence of the value of using AI technology to detect bowel polyps (adenomas) during colonoscopy procedures. The aim is to show whether Medtronic plc’s GI Genius system improves the detection of polyps when deployed in both expert centers and non-specialist units, in the routine diagnostic screening of patients referred from primary care or through the national fecal immunochemical testing program.

Cosmo Artificial Intelligence Ltd. received the FDA’s nod for its GI Genius intelligent endoscopy system. The device – the first of its kind, according to the agency – uses artificial intelligence (AI)-based on machine learning to improve the detection of lesions during colonoscopy. It will be rolled out in the U.S. by Medtronic plc, which has exclusive worldwide distribution rights.
