An already-intrigued Wall Street appreciated Relay Therapeutics Inc.’s Jan. 10 update during the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference (JPM), where the company detailed progress across its development efforts, including those with RLY-4008, an oral small-molecule inhibitor of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2), in the works for patients with FGFR2-altered cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) and other cancers. Shares of the Cambridge, Mass.-based firm (NASDAQ:RLAY) ran up by about 38%, or $6, in the five days ahead of Jan. 13. The stock closed Jan. 17 at $20.45, down 32 cents.

Dexcom Inc. appears poised for a very strong year with multiple new products, including the long-awaited G7, having recently received regulatory green lights in the U.S. and Europe. In addition, recommendations to expand coverage of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) for individuals with type 2 diabetes promise to open the market to millions of new patients. Dexcom CEO Kevin Sayer provided new details and updated guidance at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francsico earlier this week and the company released preliminary results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2022.

GE Healthcare acquires Imactis, releases preliminary Q4 results

Newly spun out GE Healthcare Technologies Inc. presented preliminary results for the fourth quarter and full year 2022 at the 41st annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference on Tuesday. The update followed the announcement of plans to purchase Imactis SAS, which developed CT-Navigation, a stereotactic needle guidance system. Terms of the Imactis deal were not disclosed.

A panel at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference touched on how multiple remote patient monitoring devices and management can be streamlined via machine learning to identify patients who need follow up, in many cases in their homes, increasing value without increasing the burden on already short-staffed health care organizations. The panelists saw technology as a way around a shortage of providers that could both increase access to care and deliver more targeted acute care while also addressing factors in health disparity to prevent development of disease.

Liquid biopsy panel debates value of individual cancer screening tests

In a lively discussion at the 40th annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, panelists from leading diagnostics companies debated the best way to screen for cancer – and whether diagnostic testing does more harm than good in some circumstances. Kevin Conroy, CEO of Exact Sciences Corp., noted that he expected liquid biopsies to have an “enormous impact on making earlier cancer detection a routine part of medical care” with his company currently developing a blood-based test for colon cancer as well as a multicancer test and one for minimal residual disease.

Intuitive exceeds revenue estimate with strong system sales despite pandemic pressures

Intuitive Surgical Inc. benefited from keen interest in resuming surgeries during pandemic troughs and hospitals investing in its Da Vinci robotic system in preparation for a more endemic phase of COVID-19, Intuitive CEO Gary Guthart said in a presentation at the J.P. Morgan 40th Annual Healthcare Conference on Jan. 12. The company’s unaudited preliminary fourth quarter and full year 2021 results also showed strong growth in procedure volumes – 19% year-over-year compared to 2020 and 13% compared to 2019. Still, Intuitive reported that “during 2021, COVID-19 resurgences continued to impact Da Vinci procedure volumes. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the company’s business has, and continues to, differ by geography and region.”
