The level of investment in Europe’s med-tech sector in 2025 did not materialize as many had hoped at the beginning of the year. Reciprocal tariffs introduced by the U.S. government created an uncertain macroeconomic environment, curtailing dealmaking and slowing financing activity. Nevertheless, amid uncertainty, there were some bright spots as medical devices remain essential, and investors know how to navigate market cycles.
Med-tech M&A activity cooled in October, with the total disclosed deal value reaching $1.68 billion, a step down from September’s $4.84 billion and well below several stronger months earlier in the year.
Organox Ltd.’s normothermic machine perfusion device, Metra, has been cleared by the U.S. FDA for use during air transport. The greenlight from the regulatory body paves the way for the broader use of donor organs that might otherwise be discarded, as the Metra system circulates oxygen and nutrient rich perfusate through the organ at near-body temperature, extending preservation times.
After making a significant strategic investment in Oxganox Ltd. earlier this year, Terumo Corp. quickly returned to buy the organ preservation company. On Aug. 25, the companies announced that Terumo would acquire Organox for $1.5 billion, marking Terumo’s entry into the organ transplant sector. The transaction is one of the largest exits ever for the U.K. med-tech sector.
Organox Ltd. raised $142 million in financing to accelerate the growth of its Metra platform that preserves and transport livers for transplantation. The funds will allow the company to strengthen its ability to support current customers, expand its customer base and enter new markets such as Canada and Australia, where it earned regulatory approvals within the last year, Steve Deitsch, CFO of Organox, told BioWorld.
Organox Ltd. gained approval from Health Canada for its Metra system for use during liver transplantation. The system utilizes normothermic machine perfusion to maintain donor livers under physiologic conditions prior to transplantation.
Organox Ltd. raised £25 million (US$33 million) in a funding round that will allow the company to expand its operations in the U.S. on the back of significantly increasing demand from transplant centers, Oern Stuge, executive chairman, at Organox told BioWorld. The Oxford, U.K.-based company which makes systems to preserve and transport livers for transplant is also preparing for its eventual listing on Nasdaq, he added.
In a move that will substantially expand the number of livers available for transplantation, the FDA granted premarket approval to Organox Ltd.’s Metra normothermic machine perfusion device for both donors after brain death (DBD) and donors after circulatory death (DCD). The approval allows preservation of organs by Metra for up to 12 hours.
