American International Pathology Laboratories (AIPL; Silver Spring, Maryland), a division of Bostwick Laboratories (Richmond Virginia) reported opening it's doors and providing positions to more than 40 civilian pathologists and staff formerly of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (Washington). The 150-year-old Institute will cease operations when Walter Reed closes under the Federal Base Realignment and Closure program.

Evan Farmer, MD, an internationally recognized dermatopathologist, will serve as Medical Director of AIPL. Under his direction, AIPL will continue the Institute's mission of providing premium anatomic pathology services to governments, scientists, physicians and patients, with an emphasis on anatomic pathology specimens and related services. The lab's team of pathologists has more than 340 years of combined experience with AFIP in 16 specialties covering the entire human body including breast and gynecologic pathology, endocrine pathology, hepatic pathology, hematopathology and infectious diseases pathology.

In addition to comprehensive second opinion anatomic pathology services, the AIPL team provides a full battery of immunohistochemical studies (over 300) and esoteric testing, including detailed genetic testing and kidney and muscle biopsies.
