• Advanced Medical Optics (AMO; Santa Ana, California) reported U.S. introduction of the Tecnis 1-Piece intraocular lens (IOL).The Tecnis 1-Piece IOL's design and enhancements combine with Tecnis IOL optics to reduce spherical aberration to essentially zero, and improve night driving simulator performance, AMO said. The IOL design combines ProTec 360-degree edge design has an uninterrupted barrier edge designed to minimize cell migration onto the posterior capsule. The Tecnis has no interruption at the haptic-optic junction. The lens also has a frosted edge designed to minimize edge glare. Made of a hydrophobic acrylic material that blocks UV light, the Tecnis transmits the healthy blue light needed for improved scotopic (dim light) vision and healthy circadian rhythms. With its simple, one-piece design and reduced center thickness, it is easy to implant with bag-friendly coplanar delivery and gently unfolding haptics. AMO makes ophthalmic surgical devices and eye care products.

• Covidien (Mansfield, Massachusetts) said that its surgical devices business has launched the Endo Clip III 5 mm clip applier in the U.S., Japan and throughout Europe. • Kingfisher Americas (Albuquerque, New Mexico) said it has received 510(k) clearance to market KFH Energy, a device intended to improve quality of life for those with chronic pain associated with post-polio syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. KFH Energy uses a form of micro-current electrotherapy called bio-electric stimulation therapy, designed to enhance the body's physiological processes. Intended for home use, KFH Energy encapsulates this technology in a hand-held device. Kingfisher Americas, a subsidiary of Kingfisher Healthcare, uses non-invasive energy to treat chronic conditions.

• Omni-Tract Surgical (St. Paul, Minnesota) reported the introduction of its new Speed-Tract retractor system at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) annual meeting. The Speed-Tract is designed for surgeons who prefer to use a "ring" style retractor. The system reduces weight which makes transport and handling of historically heavy instrument trays easier. In addition to reducing weight by as much as 20%, the system incorporates several enhanced product features not available from competitive ring retractors. The Speed-Tract table-mounted retractor system includes a table post, a flex arm, "lite" rings, RatchetBall clamps and swivel shafted blades. Omni-Tract makes table-mounted surgical retractors.
