• Burrill & Company (San Francisco) reported several promotions: Bryant Fong, to managing director, joining Burrill in 1998 after working with two early-stage companies as a biochemist and molecular biologist; Greg Young to director, joining the company in 2000 and previously working as a molecular biologist for an early-stage firm; Tiba Aynechi to senior associate, joining Burrill in 2006 after serving as a post-doctorate fellow at the University of California, San Francisco; Jackie Tay to associate, joining the company in 2006 after working in the Healthcare Investment Banking Group at Lehman Brothers. Burrill & Company specializes in activities in private equity, venture capital, merchant banking and media.

• Emergency Medical Services (EMS; Greenwood Village, Colorado) reported that Don Harvey, president/COO of EMS, AMR and EmCare, will be stepping down from his management and board positions with the company. EMS said that it plans to appoint separate executives over AMR and EmCare. EMS is a provider of emergency medical services.

John Ryan has joined Onset Ventures (Menlo Park, California) as a partner. Ryan, who will work with the medical technology investing team, joins Onset from Panorama Capital. Onset Ventures specializes in providing a mix of start-up, follow-on and intellectual capital to entrepreneurs and early-stage technology ventures.

• Parkway Clinical Laboratories (Bensalem, Pennsylvania) has named Mats Sanden, MD, as medical director; Masood Haider, PhD, as VP of operations; Carolyn Bonner as director of business development; and John Carson as director of sales. Parkway is a CLIA-certified clinical reference laboratory.
