• Randall Wilhoite was promoted to VP of operations of Anika Therapeutics (Woburn, Massachusetts). Wilhoite was Anika's director of operations since January 2006. Anika Therapeutics makes therapeutic products for tissue protection, healing and repair.
• Arbios Systems (Waltham, Massachusetts) said that Walter Ogier has resigned as president/CEO and as a member of the board. Shawn Cain, previously VP of operations, will serve as interim president/CEO. Arbios Systems makes products to help fight liver failure.
• The FDA has named Timothy Cot , MD, as the new director of FDA's office of orphan products development. Cot will be responsible for promoting the development of products that demonstrate promise for the diagnosis or treatment of rare diseases or conditions. Cot most recently served as the Centers for Disease Control's country director for the African nation of Rwanda.
• John Quinn was named chief technology officer of Health Level Seven (HL7; Atlanta). HL7 is a healthcare IT standards development organization.
• Douglas Fambrough was promoted to general partner of Oxford Bioscience Partners (Boston). Fambrough joined Oxford Bioscience Partners in January 2000 as an associate. Oxford Bioscience Partners is a venture capital firm that provides equity financing and management assistance to companies within the life sciences and healthcare sectors.
• Paul TanPiengco was named director of marketing of PhotoMedex (Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania). Most recently, TanPiengco was director of product management at Onset Therapeutics. PhotoMedex makes excimer laser and fiber optic systems and techniques directed toward dermatological applications.
• RehabCare Group (St. Louis) reported that Tom Davis, executive VP of freestanding hospital operations, will resign effective Oct. 31, to pursue an entrepreneurial venture outside of the healthcare industry. RehabCare provides physical rehabilitation services.
• U-Systems (San Jose, California) said that Bob Thompson will join the company on Oct. 1 as VP of marketing and business development. Previously Thompson was VP of marketing for Ultrasonix. U-Systems makes automated ultrasound systems.
