Construction Set To Begin On Maryland Bioprocessing FacilityGroundbreaking on a $26 million Good Manufacturing Practicesbiopharmaceutical production facility will be held today inBaltimore, adjacent to The Johns Hopkins Bayview ResearchCampus.The Maryland Bioprocessing Center is being built with a $16.5million grant from the state, a $1.5 million grant from the U.S.Commerce Department, donation of the site by the City ofBaltimore, and $3 million in cash and other considerations fromBioScience Contract Production, a private company that will buildand operate the facility.`This project is a critical part of our efforts to keep youngbiotechnology companies here and ensure that Maryland becomes ahome for biotech manufacturing," Maryland Gov. William Schaefersaid in a news release. "The availability of this early stagemanufacturing facility will help these small companies make thedifficult transition from research to production."BioScience said it hopes to open the 58,000-square-foot facility in1995. _ Jim Shrine
