HONG KONG – Upin & Co. Ltd., a fund and asset management company headquartered in London, plans to invest a total of KRW2 trillion (US$1.7 billion) over three years in the South Korean biopharma industry.
As the U.K. pursues its divorce from the EU, smaller U.S. drug and device companies could be caught disproportionately in the collateral damage. Many of them already struggle with the cost of duplicative regulatory requirements involved in marketing their products in the EU, but those costs could increase under Brexit, according to a report released last week by the U.S. International Trade Commission on trade-related barriers impacting U.S. small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that export to the U.K.
LONDON – The first systematic review and meta-analysis of the accuracy of artificial intelligence in health care has concluded AI may be as good as clinicians in interpreting medical images, but it is hard to be sure because of the poor quality of published studies. Researchers at Birmingham University, U.K. considered 31,887 journal papers appearing between January 2012 and June 2019, of which 20,530 were screened. They found most were methodologically flawed.
LONDON – Two new $250 million investment funds have been announced, promising long-term capital to new companies formed around the U.K.'s science base. Ahren Innovation Capital LP, which is supported by eight of Cambridge University's most prominent scientists – including two Nobel laureates – has closed at $250 million. Meanwhile, SV Health Investors announced the launch of its $250 million seventh fund, with the charity Cancer Research UK (CRUK) putting in $25 million as cornerstone investor.
The industry is again preparing for a no-deal Brexit, as political shifts indicate that the U.K. crashing out of the EU on Oct. 31 is an increasingly likely outcome.
