NMPA nod gives Hua Medicine first GKA approval in diabetes

Hua Medicine Ltd. has received marketing approval from China's NMPA for its glucokinase activator (GKA), Huatangning (dorzagliatin tablets), for two indications: as a monotherapy to improve blood glucose control for drug-naïve type 2 diabetes patients and in combination with metformin in metformin-tolerated type 2 diabetes patients to control blood glucose level. It marks the first GKA drug to gain approval in any market, according to Hua.

FDA greenlights Taiho’s FGFR inhibitor Lytgobi for intrahepatic cholangiocardinoma

The U.S. FDA has approved Taiho Oncology Inc.’s Lytgobi (futibatinib) for adults with previously treated, unresectable, locally advanced or metastatic intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma harboring fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR-2) gene fusions or other rearrangements. The approval arrived on its Sept. 30 PDUFA date.

Japan’s MHLW approves raft of new drugs

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) approved a slew of new drugs in the last week of September, including Japan’s first sustained release GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes from Eli Lilly and Co. and Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corp.; a self-administered injectable drug for rheumatoid arthritis from Eisai Co. Ltd. and Nippon Medac Co. Ltd.; a CAR T from Legend Biotech Corp. and Janssen Pharmaceutical KK; and two drugs from Astrazeneca plc, one in asthma and the other in pediatric plexiform neurofibromas in neurofibromatosis type 1.

FDA gives thumbs up to Santen, UBE’s Omlonti for reducing intraocular pressure

The U.S. FDA approved Santen Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.’s  and UBE Industries Ltd.’s Omlonti (omidenepag isopropyl) ophthalmic solution for reducing elevated intraocular pressure in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is the second FDA-approved product from Japan-based Santen in the last 15 months for patients in the U.S. with vision conditions.

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare approved Daiichi Sankyo Co. Ltd.’s Ezharmia (valemetostat tosilate), the first dual inhibitor of histone methyltransferases EZH1 and EZH2 for the treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory adult T-cell leukemia and lymphoma. It’s Daiichi Sankyo’s fifth new oncology medicine approved in Japan in the past three years.

China has upheld a recent ruling on a dispute between Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and Wenzhou Haihe Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. over a generic form of an osteoporosis treatment. The move is seen as an indicator that patent protection for drugs has improved in China.

China clears two new COVID-19 boosters for emergency use

China’s NMPA has granted emergency use authorization for two COVID-19 vaccines as boosters, Cansino Biologics Inc.’s inhaled vaccine Convidecia Air and Livzon Pharmaceutical Group Inc.’s recombinant protein vaccine. Convidecia Air is an aerosolized adenovirus type 5 vector-based vaccine. It is the first inhaled COVID-19 vaccine to be approved globally, according to Cansino.
