Although the $6.03 billion in biopharma financings raised in April is down from $13.84 billion in financings in March and $22.3 billion in February, the monthly average of $13.29 billion for all financings is up 125% from the average of $5.91 billion a month in 2023.

BioWorld Cancer Index ends Q1 up on pipeline progress, despite restructurings

The BioWorld Cancer Index (BCI) closed out the first quarter of 2024 with a 4.66% increase, slightly down from its 11.07% rise at the end of February. This comes after an outstanding performance in 2023, when it finished the year up by 76.26%. Despite outperforming the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index, which rose by 1.36% in Q1, BCI lagged behind the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which saw a 5.62% increase in the first three months of the year. In contrast, BCI experienced a decline of 41.98% in 2022 and a 36.34% decrease in 1021.

Biopharma index sustains Q1 growth bolstered by positive earnings

After concluding 2023 up 11.62%, the BioWorld Biopharmaceutical Index (BBI) extended its upward trajectory into the first quarter (Q1), posting a 6.4% increase at the close of March. BBI outperformed both the Dow Jones Industrial Average (up 5.62%) and the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index (up 1.36%) by the end of Q1.

March clinical trial updates show growth despite year-on-year dip

In March 2024, BioWorld reported on 261 phase I-III clinical trials updates, showing a 10.6% increase from February's count of 236 and up from January’s 252. However, March’s tally is an 18.2% decline from March 2023’s 319 updates. The average monthly count of phase I-III updates in the first three months of 2024 stood at roughly 277, compared to 305 for all of 2023.

Biopharma deal and M&A values continue fluctuations in Q1

In the initial quarter of 2024, biopharma deal value totaled $43.99 billion, surpassing the values of two quarters last year and falling short of two others. Biopharma M&As, meanwhile, reached $50.06 billion, marking a decrease from the fourth quarter last year’s $84.03 billion but exceeding the values of the other three quarters.

In March, the U.S. FDA approved 30 new drugs, marking the highest monthly count in BioWorld’s records. The previous highest month of June 2020, with 29 FDA approvals, is followed by November 2017’s 27 approvals. In 2023, the FDA greenlit an average of about 16 drugs per month, 12.5 in 2022, and 17 in both 2021 and 2020. The surge in March marks a 173% increase from the 11 drugs approved in February.

Biopharma financings hit $47B in Q1, marking second-highest quarter

Biopharma firms amassed a total of $47.07 billion in the first quarter of 2024, the second-highest quarter recorded by BioWorld since 2011, trailing only behind $48.18 billion raised in 2Q20. This robust fundraising was driven by exceptional performances in IPOs, follow-ons and public/other financings, as well as sustained trends in venture capital raises. The amount marks a 118% increase from $21.62 billion raised in the fourth quarter of 2023 and a 257% rise from 1Q23’s $13.19 billion.

March biopharma deals edge up to $8B, M&As jump to $22B

In March, biopharma deals reached $8.29 billion, slightly higher than February’s $7.76 billion. Meanwhile, biopharma M&As amounted to $22 billion for the month. In terms of volume, March saw 104 biopharma deals, up from the 100 recorded in February, yet lower than January’s 158 and the 2023 monthly average of 115 deals.
