Looking to allow customers to directly purchase its diagnostics system that runs a full panel of blood tests, Babson Diagnostics Inc. raised $31 million in new series B financing. U.S. lacks cyber oversight of hospitals’ networked medical devices

As cyberattacks on U.S. hospitals continue to increase with health care’s growing reliance on technology, a new report from the U.S. Office of Inspector General (OIG) has flagged Medicare’s requirements for being silent on the cybersecurity of networked medical devices. The OIG’s study found hospitals are not required to identify networked device cybersecurity in their emergency preparedness risk assessments, and as a result, they don’t include this information “very often.”

Boston Scientific acquires remaining interest in Farapulse for $295M

Boston Scientific Corp. has exercised an option as part of a 2020 agreement to acquire Farapulse Inc. in full, folding the startup’s pulsed electric field ablation technology for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and other cardiac arrhythmias into its own electrophysiology portfolio. With a 27% stake in Farapulse already, it will pay about $295 million for the remainder.

PMA study: Most pediatric devices are made for teens, adults

There is “a wide gap” in the availability of pediatric medical devices that suggest most of these were developed for adolescents, according to a new study on FDA premarket approval applications (PMAs). The findings stem from an evaluation of 297 PMA documents for 149 high-risk devices, 68% of which include pediatric age indications. Pediatric medical devices have lagged behind their adult counterparts in terms of availability, options and innovation. The new findings add to the current relatively limited body of research considering the ample medical device space but are consistent with previous findings that most devices indicated for children are limited to those over 18 years of age.

The biotech company’s nanosensor works by reacting to low pH and illuminates cancer like a lightbulb, distinguishing cancerous tissue from healthy tissue.

Medtronic expands FDA approval for cryoablation device

Medtronic plc won expanded FDA 510(k) approval for its Arctic Front family of cardiac cryoablation catheters for alternative treatment of recurrent symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) as an alternative to the current standard first-line treatment, antiarrhythmic drug (AAD) therapy. The Arctic Front family of catheters are the first catheter ablation devices in the U.S. approved to help physicians improve AF patient outcomes before drug failure. They have also been proven to shorten the time to diagnosis, according to Dublin-based Medtronic.
