Gilead dropping work on anti-CD47 antibody magrolimab

Feb. 7, 2024
By Jennifer Boggs
Gilead Sciences Inc. has officially discontinued work on anti-CD47 antibody magrolimab in hematologic cancers, nearly four years after shelling out $4.9 billion to acquire its developer, Forty Seven Inc. The company announced in its full-year 2023 earnings Feb. 6 call that the phase III Enhance-3 study testing magrolimab as a first-line treatment in unfit acute myeloid leukemia patients was discontinued following a futility analysis and higher incidence of grade 5 adverse events.

Marrow margin: Gilead CD47 prospect to boneyard, Shattuck’s wins in phase I

Dec. 13, 2023
By Randy Osborne
Wall Street will be watching closely for such adverse effects as anemia that foiled Gilead Sciences Inc.’s CD47-binding magrolimab earlier this year, but so far Shattuck Labs Inc.’s SL-172154 looks strong in combination with azacitidine to treat front-line higher-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (HR-MDS) and TP53-mutant (TP53m) acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Gilead paying $1.25B, plus royalties, to Viiv to resolve HIV drug patent claims

Feb. 2, 2022
By Jennifer Boggs
Gilead Sciences Inc. is making a one-time $1.25 billion payment, with a commitment for a royalty that analysts predict could add as much $1.5 billion more, to Viiv Healthcare Ltd., in a deal designed to resolve all global pending or potential patent infringement claims relating to sales of HIV drug Biktarvy (bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide). The initial payment, recorded in the fourth quarter of 2021, put a significant dent in Gilead’s earnings per share but removes the uncertainty of a trial outcome and clears the way for future bictegravir-containing products.

Gilead hits the brakes on five studies as FDA places partial clinical hold on magrolimab

Jan. 26, 2022
By Lee Landenberger
Nearly two years after Gilead Sciences Inc. spent $4.9 billion to buy Forty Seven Inc. and its lead candidate, magrolimab, the FDA clamped a partial clinical hold on five of Gilead’s clinical trials combining the therapy with azacitidine. The cause, according to Gilead’s management, is “an apparent imbalance in investigator-reported suspected unexpected serious adverse reactions between study arms.” The company said it has not identified a clear trend in the adverse reactions or new safety signals.
