Kedrion SpA’s investigational plasma-derived treatment for congenital aceruloplasminemia has been awarded European orphan drug designation by the EMA. The company is working to advance this treatment toward clinical development in Europe.
The FDA has cleared a plasma collection device developed by Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT) and plasma collection network CSL Plasma. The companies, which are subsidiaries of Terumo Corp. and CSL Ltd., signed a collaboration deal in 2021 to develop the new Rika device for CSL Plasma collection centers. The automated technology is designed to reduce plasma collection time to 35 minutes or less. According to the Red Cross, plasma donations currently take on average about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
LONDON – A large scale prospective study has shown that increased blood plasma viscosity is correlated with disease severity and the likelihood of progression to organ failure, in patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19 infections. Researchers at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, U.K. suggest this could be an easy but sensitive way to quickly triage patients admitted to hospital with symptoms of COVID-19.
Haemonetics Corp. reported sales of $209.5 million for the second quarter of fiscal year 2021, down 17.1% from the same period the prior year. PARIS – Biolog-id SAS, specialists in traceability and management of delicate health care products (red blood cells, plasma, platelets and chemotherapy substances), has just raised $33 million from fund managers Xerys Gestion. “Thanks to this new funding, we will be able to roll out our smart traceability solutions worldwide. These are used for managing labile blood products and plasma fractionation,” Jean-Claude Mongrenier, founder and CEO of the Boulogne-Billancourt, France-based company, told BioWorld MedTech.
